Concept:

Chimera is a symbol of hope for our next step in the evolutionary time line. By creating a sculpture that includes participatory elements within an enticing form we create a space for participants to be, think, play and imagine. Chimera is a steel-based structure, whose presence describes a living creature at pause in its movement, while it manifests radical visions its simple mind can barely accommodate.

Inside the Chimera

Entry to the small grotto inside the thoratic cavity; with a few small benches for participants to be able rest and enjoy the Living walls.

Living walls: Project team members Jessica Hobbs and Cheryl Fralick will be conceptualizing and realizing the living lungs of Chimera. Inspired by their past success with environmental art collaborations Cheryl and Jessica plan to create a living space brimming with color and real time growth. These two artists bring their expertise to the development of a living space that will not moopify the playa.

The 12’ long by 6’ high space within Chimera will be a misted cooling environment activated by the growth of crystal walls. Small modules of the growth medium, will create the living walls of crystal life. These will be intra connected via a steel frame and irrigated daily with a mineral salt solution. The innovative irrigation system will be 1/4” poly tubing and low volume emitters pressurized by a small hand pump plumbed to a 55 gal water storage barrel. The growing crystaline walls will be enclosed to ensure no material can escape and become moop.
