Physical Description
Chimera is a symbol of hope for our next step in the evolutionary timeline. By creating a sculpture that includes participatory elements within an enticing form we create a space for participants to be, think, play and imagine. Chimera is a steel-based structure, whose presence describes a living creature at pause in its movement, while it manifests radical visions its simple mind can barely accommodate. The extremities of its spine fin, forearms, fishy tail and mastadon-like tusks are exposed sculpted steel, while its thorax, tail, neck and lower head are covered in a flexible skin evocative of a leathery organic surface. It conical eyes protrude from its face while its expanding, glowing cranium is sculpted in translucent resin and fiberglass, allowing internally projected light and shadow to play across its surface.
Although the Chimera’s form is large, strong, and solid, the subtle synchronous pulsation of its flame, light, and kinetic effects impart a steady intent to live, to think, and to thrive. Participants can move through, over, and into this strange but welcoming creature. The warmth of its firelight, the animated visions flitting over its translucent crown, and its open and lit belly invite the intrepid explorer in rewarding them with a rich sensory environment; a place of investigation and rest, a secret living interior to delve into, and a chance to manifest visions. The following sections detail the dimensions, material, and methods proposed for creating, shipping, installing, performing, and removing the Chimera.
